Embrace You의 Rude Paper 인터뷰 (해석)

I was completely blown away by the undeniable talent of Rude Paper. This South Korean duo is trying to make a name for themselves in an industry that seems swarmed by Kpop artists. What sets them apart? The fact that their music embodies elements of House, Reggae, Hip Hop, Rock & Rock, Soul, and Hardcore. Their sound is fresh and straight up street. This is as real as it gets, and Rude Paper is giving us music that is not only entertaining but original as well. EY: Who are the members of Rude Paper and what inspired the name?

RD – My name is RD aka realdreamer, the team’s producer and performer.

Koonta – My name is Koonta Siddarta and Rudepaper is name of someone who is very close to us. You will get to know about him as time passes.

 

EY: I learned that you both had your own individual thing going prior to forming this project. What were you guys hoping to achieve by coming together?

RD – It is good for a producer to help others but I wanted to find something that can show my own characteristics. And I met koonta and found out we had a similar goal so it happens to form a group. This isn’t just project team it will become a band and stay with me forever.

Koonta – I was doing project team as Koonta and Nuoliunce and because of a contract it became real group. We had different perspective as musicians we made agreement and broke up. I’ve been playing around every day and one day met RD. This is not a joke, I only have one purpose. I want to make a music that I want to hear on the street.

 

EY: Describe the vibe that each member brings to Rude Paper that makes you different from other musicians?

RD – Rude Paper is not about the individuals it is one entity. So we don’t make music that is only in our personal interest, we make music that only we can make. We are trying to seek for that kind of music still. And I think that is what makes us different from other groups.

Koonta – 1+1=1? We make one instead 2.

 

EY: It’s very evident that your music is influenced by Reggae. How is Reggae received in South Korea and what other genres do you incorporate in your sound?

Koonta – Korean people don’t have a huge interest in reggae. Well, there isn’t any huge reggae musician in Korea. This is the problem that every reggae musician has to solve.

RD – It’s hard to say that we are doing traditional reggae music. We met each other in the first place to show a different style of music to the street. Of course, Since Koonta was a reggae vocalist there is that…We want to make fun and entertaining music which can encompass house, hip hop, rock and roll, hardcore, and soul.

EY: Who are some of the artists that influence you both?

RD – Before going to high school I had been listening to lots of Stevie Wonder music and after going to high school, I have listened to alternative, hiphop, and R&B music. If you ask which artist influenced me well I don’t really know what to say. I basically like everything I listen to. Well, to tell you the truth, when I listen to any music I listen to find the strength rather than the weakness of music. Since I listen to every genre of music it is hard to say what origin my music style is.

Koonta - I’m a huge fan of Wyclef Jean. When the Fugees first came out I was only a child. I liked him because I thought he had his own style of rap. At that time I didn’t even know that was reggae.

RD – I’m the same as Koonta. I’m also huge fan of the Fugees.

 

EY: Tell us about the EP’s title track “Radio”. What is the concept behind the song and music video?

RD – When we were first making Radio we were trying to make something glorious. But while working with Koonta the music itself has changed and it turned out to be a jackpot. If you see it in one perspective it has essence of rock and roll and also glory sound that I wanted. And also others say there is a reggae sound to it too…

Koonta – It took us less than an hour to finish this track. We were possessed by something and everything has turned so quickly.

RD – This is the music that makes me proud of myself. This is also a music that has Rude Paper. We have been working with each other for 3 years and even now every time I hear this music I can feel the excitement of when I madeRadio. I want many people to feel that excitement that we feel.

Koonta - The music video was made by digipedi team and they are the people that are brethren to RD. They are really funny people.

RD – I trusted that team a lot so we decided to follow their suggestions for the music video. And the concept that digipedi team decided was making 3^rdblack comedy movie. Personally it was my first time to act, it was hard and awful. I think Koonta did well and music video turned out well too.

 

EY: English is used in some parts of the new song. Have you ever considered recording an English album?

Koonta – Um.. English.. well the only problem is that I’m not a fluent English speaker. I would love to make an English album.

RD – We want to make an English album. We want more international fans to listen to our music.

EY: Are there any international artists or producers you would like to work with and why?

Koonta – I have never thought of working with someone. I want to work with someone who is fun to work with.

RD – To tell you the truth, I have too many people right now and it is hard to list them right now because I might miss few names if I do it right now.

EY: How do you feel about the fact that music from South Korea is now reaching listeners worldwide?

Koonta – I was surprised. Thanks to all the people who worked to build the internet and good computers. Go internet!!!

 

EY: There’s something I want to ask your opinion on and it’s because I’ve read many discussions about it. Do you guys think that fans in your home country [South Korea] tend to go overboard when it involves investigating the personal lives of their idols?

RD – Well we never heard about it.. I didn’t know fans were that serious?

Koonta – If you are in Korea lots of private picture and videos are on the internet. Hollywood Paparazzi are nothing! In korea every person is like the paparazzi~ we are the strongest.

 

EY: How do you guys draw the line on what you’ll share and what you’ll keep private?

Koonta – I love to fool around so 90% of my picture is something hideous. So there is no need for me to hide.

RD – I have a different perspective. I want to hide my private life from the public.

 

EY: What’s next for Rude Paper?

Koonta – Make more good music and keep promises to everyone who loves me. That is all I have to do.

RD – We will perform lots of live concerts and we want to perform a concert on foreign soil.

 나는 루드페이퍼의 이 명백한 재능에 완전히 압도당했다. 이 남한 듀오(ㅋㅋ)는 자신들의 이름을 떨치기 위해 상업성에 둘러쌓인 케이팝 아리스트사이에서 스스로 노력하고있다. 이들은 뭐가 다른가? 얘네 음악은 하우스, 레게, 힙합, 락&락, 소울, 하드코어를 다룬다. 소리가 존나 신선하고 성실하다. 그냥 리얼이고 즐거울 뿐만 아니라 오리지널이다. radio 뮤비를 꼭 쳌아웃하고 인터뷰 읽어서 이 남자들에 대해 더 알아보자.

질문 : 루드페이퍼의 멤버는 누구며 이름은 무슨 뜻인가요?

RD : Realdreamer의 줄임말이 RD고, 프로듀서와 작곡가를 맡고 있습니다.

쿤타 : 전 쿤타 싯다르타고 우리랑 되게 가까운 사람에서 이름을 따왔어요.(부처님 태자때 이름이 싯다르타임) 당신은 그에 대해서 알게 될겁니다.

질문 : 저는 당신 둘이 당신들만의 독특한 걸 이번 프로젝트에서 했다고 봤습니다. 당신들이 함께한 이 작업물에서 바라는게 뭐죠?

RD : 프로듀서로 남들 작업에 도움 줄 때도 좋았지만 전 제 특징을 보여줄수 있는 뭔가를 할 수 있길 바랬습니다. 그리고 쿤타를 만났고 우리는 목표가 비슷했고 그래서 그룹을 만들었습니다. 우린 절대 일회성 프로젝트 팀으로만 끝나지 않고 밴드로서 함께 할 겁니다. 영.원.히.

쿤타 : 저는 Koonta & Nuoliunce라는 프로젝트 팀을 했었고, 이유는 리얼 그룹이 되고 싶었기 때문입니다. 하지만 뮤지션으로서의 관점이 달랐고 합의 하에 그룹을 해체하게 되었습니다. 그 후 매일 혼자 놀던 중 어느 날 리얼드리머를 만나게 되었죠. 농담이 아니고, 저는 단 하나의 목적만을 가지고 있습니다. 전 제가 길거리를 걸으면서 듣고 싶은 음악을 만들고 싶습니다.

질문 : 루드 페이퍼가 다른 뮤지션들과는 다르다는 돋보이는 매력을 설명해줄 수 있겠습니까?

RD : 루드 페이퍼는 개별이 아니라 하나의 존재입니다. 우리는 개별 취향의 음악을 만들지 않습니다. 우리가 할 수 있는 음악을 만듭니다. 우린 여전히 음악을 추구하며 노력하고 있고 전 이게 다른 그룹과 우리가 다른 점이라고 봅니다.

쿤타 : 1+1=1? 우린 하나입니다.

질문 : 당신들 음악이 레게에서 강한 영감을 받았다는 건 매우 명백한데, 남한에서 레게의 위상은 어떠며 다른 장르들은 당신들의 음악에 어떤 식으로 녹아들어갔나요?

쿤타 : 한국인들은 레게에 큰 흥미를 갖고 있지 않아요. 음, 유명한 레게 뮤지션이 한국에는 없구요. 이건 모든 레게 뮤지션이 풀어야 할 문제라고 생각해요.

RD : 우리가 전통적 레게음악을 했다고 말하긴 어렵습니다. 우린 다른 음악 스타일의 음악을 하다가 만났어요. 그러니까, 쿤타가 레게 보컬로서 있을 때... 우리는 즐거움과 재미를 추구하기 위해 하우스 힙합, 락앤롤, 하드코어, 소울등의 스타일을 음악에 아울러 적용시켰죠.

질문 : 당신들 각각에게 영향을 준 아티스트는 누가 있나요?

RD : 고등학교를 가기 전부터 졸업하고 난 후까지 스티비 원더의 음악을 엄청 많이 들었어요. 저는 얼터너티브, 힙합, R&B 음악을 들었습니다. 만약 당신이 어떤 아티스트에게 영향을 받았냐를 묻는 거라면 전 말하기가 어렵네요. 저는 기본적으로 제가 듣는 모든 걸 좋아합니다. 음, 사실 말하면 제가 어떤 음악을 듣던 단점보다는 장점을 찾아서 들어요. 제가 음악의 모든 장르를 듣기 때문에 제 음악 스타일의 근간이 어디인지 말하기가 어렵네요.

쿤타 : 저는 와이클리프 진의 열혈 팬이에요. 퓨지스가 처음 나왔을 때 전 꼬맹이었어요. 제가 그를 좋아한 이유는 그가 그만의 랩 스타일을 가지고 있다고 생각했기 때문이었어요. 그때 전 레게에 대해선 알지도 못했죠.

RD : 저도 쿤타와 마찬가지로 퓨지스의 빅팬입니다. 사!랑!해!요! 퓨지스!




여기부터는 지인이 한 해석

EY: 이번 EP의 타이틀인 "Radio"의 콘셉트와 뮤직비디오나 노래의 뒷이야기가 있나요?

레알드리머-

우리가 처음 Radio를 만들떄 우린 좀 장엄한삘의 곡을 만들고싶었어요.그런데 쿤타랑 함께하다보니 이 음악이 그자체로 뭔가 대박이다 싶더라구요 ㅎㅎ 그러니까 어떤 한측면에서 보면 이곡은 로큰롤의 정수를담으면서 제가 원했던 어떤 장엄한 사운드를 담고있는데말입니다, 요게 또 어떤사람들은 이걸 레게사운드라고 생각하더라구요

쿤타- 이거 다만드는데 한시간도안걸렸어요ㅋㅋ 뭔가 신들린거처럼 되게 빨리 끝나더라구요

레알드리머- 이런곡을 만든제가 정말 자랑스러워요. 그리고 이곡은 루드페이퍼라는팀자체의 근간이되는 곡이거든요. 우리가 3년동안이나 같이 일했는데, 이곡을 들을때마다 만들때의 그 짜릿함이 떠오르더라구요. 전 많은사람들이 저희가 느끼는 그 즐거움을 같이 느꼇으면해요.

쿤타- 이곡 뮤직비디오는 digipedi team이 만들었는데요, 걔들은 리얼드리머랑 형동생하는사이거든요. 되게 재미잇는사람들이예여

EY: 영어가 발매하신 곡들에 이따금씩 쓰이던데, 영어로 앨범하나 내실생각은 없으신가요?

쿤타: 음... 영어..음... 하 제가 영어를 현지인들처럼 할줄모른다는게 문젠데요, 일단 만들어보고는 싶어요

리얼드리머: 우린 영어앨범을 만들어 보고 싶어요. 세계적으로 우리의 음악을 들어주는사람이 생기면 좋겠죠.

EY: 국제적으로 노는 예술가들 아님 프로듀서들중에 같이 일해보고싶은사람이있다면 누구고 왜 그와 일해보고싶으신지 말씀해주시죠

쿤타: 나는 누구랑같이 일해보는걸 생각해본적이 별로없는거같아요. 음.. 그냥 같이일하기 즐거운사람이면좋겠네여

리얼드리머:솔까말하면, 지금 이미 너무 많은사람들이 생각나서 ㅋㅋㅋ 누구누구 목록을뽑기가 좀 그렇네요 ㅎㅎ 지금 말했다가 몇몇 빼먹을거같아서요

EY: 한국음악들이 이제 전세계에서 플레이되는데, 그것에대해 어떻게 느끼시는지요?

쿤타: 아 깝놀했어요. 진짜 인터넷이랑 컴퓨터 좋은거 만든사람들 너무 고마워요. 인터넷 짱!! 

EY: 이거에대해 갑론을박하는걸 여러번봐와서 당신들의 의견을 묻고싶은게있는데요. 루드페이퍼 여러분들은 여러분 고향의 한국인팬들이 그들의 우상의 사생활에대해 너무 많이 나가는것에대해 어떻게 생각하세요?

(그니까 뭐 사생팬들이나 그런거 묻는거같네염)

레알드리머:음;; 전 거기에대해 아는게없어서여;; 그렇게 심각한수준인가요?

쿤타: 당신이 한국에 살게되면 ,인터넷에 많은 사적인 사진들이랑 비됴들이 돌아다니게되요. 할리우드 파파라치들은 진짜 암것도아녜요 ㅋㅋ. 한국에서는 모든사람들이 파파라치거든여 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ 우리가 젤 쎄요 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

EY: 그럼 여러분들은 사생활로 지킬것들이랑 다른사람들이랑 교류할것들이랑 어떤식으로 그 기준을 잡으시는지요?

쿤타: 전 되게 노닥거리는거 좋아하거든요 ㅋㅋ 그래서 제사진 거의 90퍼센트가 좀 보기 끔찍한종류예요 ㅋㅋ 뭐 그래서 숨길필요도없을거같아요 

레알드리머: 저는 관점이좀달라요. 전 제 사생활은 공공에 노출하고싶지가않아서요.

EY: 루드페이퍼의 다음 계획은 어떻게되죠?

쿤타: 더좋은음악들을 더많들어서 모두가 절좋아하도록 만들겠다는 약속을 지켜야죠. 그거만하면돼요.

리얼드리머: 우리 되게 라이브공연 많이들 하거든요. 아 foreign soil에서도 공연할수있었으면좋겠네요
